Outdoor Summer Sports for Families

Outdoor Summer Sports for Families

If you live in the Northeastern US like this writer, than you know that summer has finally arrived. As hot as summer might get, it’s also a great time of year for kids and families to stay active with together. Longer days, warm weather, and much-needed breaks from academics create a host of new opportunities for children and parents to spend more time together outdoors.

The thing is, it doesn’t really matter if your family is highly athletic or just like to play games outside, summer is the perfect time to find new ways to stay active and create fun, while encouraging healthy habits and enriching the familial bonds that parents are always trying so hard to hold onto.

In this article, we will discuss a number of fun summer sports options for kids and families that can be adapted for different ages and skill levels. With any luck, parents can use these sports ideas to encourage their kids to take time away from screens and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Why Outdoor Sports Matter for Families

It isn’t just that summer is the perfect weather for outdoor sports, it’s that outdoor sports options offer benefits that go far beyond those of regular “exercise.” Sure, sports activities of all kinds can improve one’s physical fitness, keep kids active, and improve coordination, balance, and mental acuity. But outdoor sports incorporate all these positive elements while also giving kids a chance to get fresh air, vitamin D, and exposure to nature; all things that modern kids are lacking thanks to the addictive properties of phones, tablets, and TV.

Family sports activities also help in this regard by helping kids build up their communication and teamwork skills. They also help reduce stress and allow them to connect with their siblings, parents, cousins, and more. Many experts agree that children who see parents participating in physical activity are also more likely to develop those same healthy long-term habits themselves. It’s a true win-win!

Summer is also especially valuable because families often have more flexibility and free time to explore a host of new new activities together.

Soccer: Easy and Accessible for All Ages

Soccer is probably the most popular sport in the world and with the World Cup usually taking place in and around summer time, it’s a great sport for families from all walks of life to play together. The simplicity of its rules and equipment also means that it’s one of the easiest family sports to organize. All you really need to play soccer is a ball, some open space, and ideally, some comfortable shoes; though plenty of people play it barefoot!

Families can enjoy casual games with one another or small scrimmages where different family members pair off into teams. Parents can also organize skill challenges like shooting for the goal or passing to improve the skills of younger or more inexperienced players. Also, soccer’s simplicity means it’s easy to modify, so younger children and older siblings can often play together without issue.

Swimming and Water Sports

Summertime is the time for swimming, but that doesn’t mean that families have to stick to simple, boring swimming. There are plenty of water-based sports like paddleboarding, kayaking, and surfing that families can do together. And even if they don’t have access to the equipment or locales needed for those particular sports, there are dozens of water games like Marco Polo, diving games, water tag, etc. that can be played in a backyard swimming pool.

Swimming in any capacity is good for kids and adults alike because it provides excellent low-impact exercise. At the same time, spending time in the water with one’s children can help kids build confidence and vital water safety skills. For families living near lakes or beaches, water sports are often a key piece of their summer family traditions.

Bike Riding Adventures

Family bike rides might not seem like an overtly sporty activity but they are an excellent form of exercise nontheless. Not only do bike rides combine exercise with exploration, they help children to improve their endurance, balance, and leg strength. And you don’t have to take your kids on a ride through the mountains or anything like that, you can just ride through a park or nature trail, down the boardwalk, or in your very own neighborhood.

In fact, many communities offer safe bike trails specifically designed for recreational riders, young riders, or families. It can be a relaxing way to engage with physical fitness and is perfect for families who have kids at varying levels of fitness.

Beach Sports and Sand Activities

If you’re lucky enough to live near the beach, then your summer sports options just doubles. Families can surf, play frisbee, play volleyball, or do a round of sand soccer; provided there is enough free space to do so. Playing on the sand is more difficult than playing on the grass or pavement, so it’s a great way to improve a child’s strength and balance.

The added physical challenge of sand often goes unnoticed by children during the heat of play, so it can give kids a chance to workout without them realizing. After all, they’re just enjoying their time on the beach, playing a casual game of volleyball with sand between their toes, why would they worry about anything else? The same is true for parents…though you may feel that sandy workout come the next morning.

Backyard Sports and Games

Not every family sporting event needs to be organized. You don’t necessarily need team sports or even pre-planned activities to have fun or stay active. Sometimes all it takes is shooting hoops in the driveway, or playing catch, cornhole, or badminton in the backyard to create a fun time.

The truth is, sometimes the simplest backyard sports can be the most meaningful. It doesn’t hurt that they are also the most low-pressure events we’ll be discussing today. And frankly, younger children will enjoy these types of physical activities far more than they will overly-complex summer sports.

Hiking as an Active Family Activity

We close out today with an outdoor sports activity that is rather more intense than a game of wiffle ball in the backyard. Camping is an enjoyable activity that families can do together, and while camping, some families will take the opportunity to go on a hike. Hiking might sound difficult to the uninformed, but it doesn’t have to be.

In fact, it can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be; it all depends on the trail you take. In addition, it also provides an excellent mix of physical activity and outdoor exploration. Hiking encourages a child’s curiosity about nature, is a great time for families to converse, learn, and bond, and is a great way to up everyone’s endurance. Just be prepared with proper hydration, snacks, and sunscreen! Honestly, that last bit is probably a good idea for any and all of these outdoor activities.

Cultured Athlete Says…

Outdoor summer sports provide families with opportunities to stay active, build healthy habits, and create lasting memories together. From soccer and swimming to biking and backyard games, there are countless ways for parents and children to enjoy movement and connection during the summer months.

The most important part isn’t skill level or competition.

It’s spending time together, encouraging healthy activity, and helping children associate sports and exercise with fun, confidence, and family connection.

Because long after summer ends, the memories built through these shared experiences often last far beyond the season itself.
